A Cry for Help

Call upon me in times of trouble; I will rescue you, and you shall glorify me
— Psalm 50:15

Peter Mwangi is the head teacher for Matongu Primary School. His school has about 350 students and is located in Muranga County in Kenya. His students were struggling, and he knew it was not because they were not smart. They were sick, tired, and didn’t have enough time in school. Every problem all came down to one simple thing - water. More specifically, the lack of water. The closest rivers are 5.5 and 6 kilometers away (~`3.5 miles). There are no streams from the river that go near them. The students must walk to different locations and find standing water. The water is murky and dirty, but it is necessary to gather in order to ‘clean’ the school and wash their hands.

Peter has to watch his students every morning and afternoon go searching for, and gathering, water - taking them away from their teachers and away from learning. As this water is not clean, many kids will get sick from their heads to their tummies. The water can also be dangerous to get to, hidden under rocks where people fall and get hurt. Peter was heartbroken watching day after day the kids walking, hurting, and missing school.

He cried out to God to help His children - they were desperate. He reached out to Can Do Kids Intl. and Wamatangi, our Kenya director, went to the school to pray with them. We sent our friend Martin, a Mt. Kenya TV videographer, to go with and document the situation. Afterwards, Martin created a video from the footage and we shared it on Facebook, not knowing what to expect.

But God’s plan was in motion, and within just a few days we had not one, but TWO commitments to sponsor an entire water project!!

The Open Door Church in MN sponsored Matongu Primary and the Cathcart family from Nashville, TN sponsorship funded Kiumba Primary School which serves an additional 320 students.
